In the first episode of a two-part “Castle” event, Castle and Beckett pursue a ruthless killer who, they discover, is part of a sinister, international conspiracy. Castle and Beckett are joined on the case by Sophia Conrad, a smart, sexy CIA operative who has a complicated past with Castle.(from IMDB )
Being that this was the first part of a two-part episode, I’m willing to understand why there wasn’t as much action and adventure as I expected. I felt like a bunch of the episode was spent primarily in the secret underground CIA headquarters. That didn’t really make for a lot of interesting scenes. The introduction of Sophia Conrad (who influenced Clara Stryke in Castle’s previous novels) was fun. Kate being jealous of Castle’s previous muse was very funny, but the episode as a whole felt a little bland. I’m pretty sure most of that stems from the fact that they were setting up for the cliffhanger at the end of the episode and next week’s ending to the episode. It felt a little bit like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1. It was great at initiating the story for the two-parter, but the big stuff didn’t happen until the final moments of the episode.
I may change my mind when I see the second half, but as of right now, it wasn’t my favorite of Castle’s two-parters.
Jennifer Beals (Sophia Conrad): As a character, I liked her. The introduction was great and she really mixed well against Kate’s fierceness. As an actress, she was great. She played against Kate and Rick as a team perfectly. However, I didn’t see the chemistry between her and Rick most of the time. There were a few moments where it wiggled its way in, but for the most part it felt really forced.
Maybe I’m just a bit defensive over Kate, though. Yeah, that’s probably what’s happening.
Castle: Do you realize what this means? We’re like spies. It’s like a Jason Bourne movie.
Oh, Castle and your obsession with being a spy. I wonder if you’re going to feel that same way after how the episode ended.
Sophia: Rick Castle at a loss for words? Must be a first.
Beckett: What are you doing?
Castle: Bracing myself to shield you from a hail of bullets.
