Rewind ` What A Girl Wants

This is a new feature I’ll be doing every once and while. Have you ever had a movie that you remember loving, then you watch it years later and look at it completely different? That’s what this is going to be. I’ll be watching movies that I haven’t seen in at least a year (or that I can’t remember the last time I watched it), and comparing my remembrance of it to what I thought about it afterwards.

What A Girl Wants

Starring: Amanda Bynes & Colin Firth
Rating: PG
Release Date: April 3, 2003

An American teenager learns that her father is a wealthy British politician running for office. Although she is eager to find him, she realizes it could cause a scandal and cost him the election.

Thoughts Before
Really my main remembrance of this movie is the fact that it has Colin Firth in it. Also that this was a movie that hit incredibly close to home. As someone who was raised by a single parent I identified with Daphne’s character wanting to find the missing link in her family. More than anything I think my attachment to the story made me love this movie. I remember loving the Daphne character, and watching her put her own spin on everything made this movie completely worth watching.

I’m pretty sure this was one of the first on DVD commentaries I ever listened to.

Thoughts After
I actually forgot how much I enjoy this movie. As I watched it, my attachment to Daphne and her storyline with her dad never moved. One thing I noticed different was that I was more interested in the Daphne&Henry relationship, than the Daphne & Ian relationship.

Ian was a great addition to the cast, but I think that even if they hadn’t given Daphne a love interest, it still would have been a really good movie.

Excellent. I think it does a great job holding your attention even if you seen it before, and that the message continues to hold true whether you watch it once, or fifty times.

Would you watch it more than once a year?
This was one of those movies that has stayed on my shelf through all of my moves. Though I hadn’t watched it in ages, I could never bring myself to get rid of it. So I would say Yes, this movie is one I would (and should) watch more than once a year.
